The Power of Covid-19

The race to see who can develop a vaccine between countries is on. As everyone knows, this whole virus has become political and in general, a race for power. In this post, I will be focusing on the hypothetical situation of if the United States were to develop the superior vaccine. With the election coming up, there are two possible scenarios: a Trump re-election and a Biden presidency.

For now, I will touch on what could happen with a Trump re-election. Obviously, we all know Trump blames the Chinese for the start of this whole global pandemic. He has used phrases such as the "Chinese virus," and has made it very clear where he stands. The current president is a businessman, and obviously runs our country as if it were a business. If the United States were to develop a vaccine with him remaining in power, I think it could go one of two ways. One direction it could go is the vaccine is distributed amongst the rest of the world after Americans receive it. However, regardless of who is president, I can see this being used as a power trip to make the rest of the world indebted to the United States. The other route it could go is the president withholding the vaccine from the rest of the world. In this case, the vaccine would be held ransom in order to benefit the United States. In this case, it would only be released if something was done to benefit the United States.

However, what would this do to the United States' relationships with the rest of the world? The world today is a constant competition to who has the most power. Would this spark China to withhold resources for the United States? Or could this cause an even bigger strain on the United States' relationship with Russia?
